:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from RG PVB -- A real life adventure : A well written book about an experience some time ago, and still so relevant even today. Chris takes us on his journey to a part of the world that we only know of through news blips. A history/ adventure story of a once young man who thought it a great idea to venture into unknown waring territory and somehow through the grace of local leaders, his traveling companion and a lot of luck, he returned to tell about his adventure. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Russell Davis -- Excellent : A captivating story of a young man whose career reevaluating jaunt quickly turns into a crash course in history, humanity, and terror. Hard to put down, and harder to forget. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from L. Chuss -- Gripping, humane, insightful, and an easy learning opportunity too : Don't know as much about Afghanistan as you wish to know? Like your lessons told from the perspective of a person you can relate to (meaning not a post doc publishing a variant of their thesis)? Appreciate a highly skilled and genuine writer? If so, you'll love this book. Woolf takes the reader through his short trip as a young journalist with the BBC to Afghanistan, sharing impressions of the people, the landscape, and the real and present dangers in the way only a first-timer could do. Lucky for us, he is also a student of history and fills in the pre-trip and post-trip periods in terms of what's happened and is still happening in the country. It's a smooth crash course about an important topic. Great writing. Can't recommend it more highly. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michelle Redo -- Historical context, adventure travel and coming of age, all in one : This book is equal parts a multifaceted Afghanistan history offering valuable insight to the country's status today, a ride-along adventure story from Kabul up and through the mountain range called the Hindu Kush, and candid personal history. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ann Van Den Bergh -- Unique vantage point : This book weaves a unique tale of a trip through Afghanistan. With a vintage lense, we gain access to a country and culture that many of us need a better understanding of today. Chris is a charismatic writer who holds your attention and keeps you turning page after page! Highly recommended! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Diego Lopez -- Entertaining, Suspenseful, and Informative. : Chris tells and excellent story of his travels through Afghanistan in the early 1990’s featuring fascinating people and places. While being entertaining and suspenseful, he also manages to educate readers a lot on Afghanistan’s culture and history. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Great read! : Vivid, honest looking back at when the author, as a relatively inexperienced journalist, found himself in deep, deep trouble in the middle of Aghanistan's civil wars. This book is a great way of getting a new look at how things are there. Highly recommended. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 30, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cross Vic -- An insightful look at surviving in a war zone : Chris Woolf relates a visit to a BBC colleague in Kabul in 1991 to see if his army training prepares him for a real war. It doesn’t but he discovers as much about himself as about the beautiful and benighted land of Afghanistan. A rattling good read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 26, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from dave miles -- A great read. : A brilliant read. The true story of a young journalist caught up in historic world events of 30 years ago which are still shaping modern Afghanistan. The fear and trepidation come across well in the narrative and accompanied by excellent photographs by the author. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 20, 2021 )
